MMK Department's Day 2024

Summary

A 6-month study of intermittent fasting, according to the 5:2 diet, on cardio-vascular risk factors was performed in 97 overweight participants, 35 with and 62 without type 2 diabetes (T2D). 93/97 completed the 6-month trial. Significant weight loss, and decrease in waist circumference, trunk fat %, LDL cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were observed in both groups. Waist circumference decreased significantly more in T2D. HbA1c and fasting glucose decreased in T2D. Age-adjusted IGF-1 and IGFBP-1 improved in the T2D group. Adiponectin increased in both groups.

In conclusion the 5:2 diet was feasible to follow, characterized by few dropouts (4/97) and effective to lose weight and improve metabolic and hormonal CVD risk factors in overweight and obese participants with and without T2D. These observations support the 5:2 diet as an option for overweight or obese individuals with T2D.
