Om mig
I am an Associated Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Karolinska Institutet. In addition, I am also:
- Acting as a Senior scientist at the Department of Clinical Science Intervention and Technology, Unit for Renal Medicine, Karolinska University Hospital.
- Acting as a Director for the Doctoral program in Development and Regeneration.
- Founder of Gendered Innovation Alliance at KI - a platform for knowledge sharing regarding implementation of gender dimension in research and educational content towards innovations in medicine and health care.
- A TEDx Stockholm advisory board member.
- PI at KI for ACT, a new Horizon 2020 EU project on Gender Equality & Gender Dimension in research. Read more here.
- PI at KI for the EU GenderNet Plus Co-Fund project: Gender Outcomes INternational Group: to Further Well-being Development (GOING-FWD).
To address growing societal and economic challenges, I believe that the role of the university is not limited to education and research but includes the "third mission". Both researchers and students can act as changemakers, engage with society and link the university’s activities with its socio-economic context to improve health for everybody.

Forskningsbeskrivning
Investigations concentrate on vascular physiology and pathophysiology with focus on resistance artery function in patients with chronic kidney disease, and in women at reproductive age and after menopause.
Studies involve a range of different isolated small artery bioassays, pharmacological and molecular assessments of endothelial dysfunctional markers and cellular signalling in combination with in in vivo assessment of artery function and measurements of known and recently recognized biochemical markers for increased cardiovascular risk. Specific focus is on the early vascular ageing under uremic environment and effects of senolytics.
Finally, in the latest EU and international projects, focus on implementation of the gender dimension in the research content and education, as well as identification of gender-related factors for the disease outcomes towards personalized approaches to chronic disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Current projects:
- Chronic kidney disease and premature vascular ageing: focus on injury with potential for targeted interventions;
- Specific targeting a prostaglandin E2 pathway;
- Act on Gender: building Communities of Practice for gender equality in HE and R&I (Horizon 2020, grant agreement No 788204;
- Gender Outcomes International Group: to Further well-being Development (GOING-FVD; VR Dnr 4-94/2019);
- Small artery function in normal pregnancy and preeclampsia;
- Determination of cardiovascular risk factors and vascular function in women with history of preeclampsia;
- History of preeclampsia and risk for end stage renal disease;
- Dietary intervention in PCOS women and endothelial function;
- ET-1-mediated endothelial dysfunction: implications for eNOS uncoupling and screening for mechanisms behind;
- Resistance vasculature in chronic kidney disease: targeting compromised pathways and prerequisites for therapeutic alternatives;
- Effects of different pharmacological agents with proposed cardiovascular benefit on endothelial function in arteries from women and men with and without CVD.
Pedagogiska meriter
Undergraduate and doctoral education, supervision for master's, PhD and Post Doc studies.
Focus on vascular physiology and pathophysiology with focus on endothelial function.
Particular interest on women's cardiovascular health at reproductive age and after menopause and implementation of sex/gender aspects in preclinical and clinical research towards innovation in health care.
Portfolio: doctoral courses (Sex/gender aspects in biomedical research, Methodologies in clinical research, Artery function in health and disease and other EU courses for ITN and ESR), undergraduate courses (Gender aspects in health and disease).
As a leader for the doctoral program in Development and Regeneration, I not only work towards excellent multidisciplinary course curriculum, but also foster initiatives from students and encourage them for collaborative and creative initiatives to become future’s innovative scientists, leaders, company developers, social entrepreneurs and teachers.
Since 2017, DEVREG has organized a number of TEDx inspired KI DEVREG Salons, forums for transferrable skills and important topics that are normally not covered by the curriculum. Learning for life, learning for change, learning for better world!
In September 2018, I acted as one of the course leaders for The INTRICARE EU Horizon 2020 Marie Curie ITN course. It was allocated to the KI DEVREG program and covered some of the latest advances in cardiovascular medicine: from basic to translational research with added value for transferable skills and on the implementation of the sex and gender perspectives in preclinical and clinical research.
