About me

  • Jan Andersson is Professor of Infectious Diseases at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge since 1 December 1998.

Research

  • Since 1981, when the first cases of AIDS appeared in the USA, 60 million people have been infected with HIV worldwide, and a total of 25 million people have died of AIDS.

Today, the disease is most widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa. Heterosexual transmission is now predominant, and young women are being hit particularly hard.

Disease-modifying drugs have been developed, and although these do not yet offer a cure, they can radically prolong the life of those affected. About 1 in 300 of those infected are able to keep their HIV infection under control, and understanding how their immunity works can form the basis of a future vaccine and attempts at a cure with immunity-boosting biological treatments.
