    Det är numera välkänt att tumörcellernas ämnesomsättning (metabolism)
    skiljer sig avsevärt från den ursprungliga normala vävnaden som
    tumörcellen härstammar ifrån. Tumörcellerna har ett högre behov av
    näringsämnen/energi i jämförselse med normala friska celler. Detta ökade
    energibehov sker eftersom tumörcellerna delar sig snabbare och behöver nya
    byggmaterial såsom proteiner, fetter, DNA, etc. alla komponenter som behövs
    för att bilda en ny cell. Det finns dock väldigt lite kunskap om
    metaboliska skillnader inom en tumörsort.
    Om man upptäcker nya metaboliska särskiljaktigheter hos tumörer,
    förväntas det att om man svälter tumörceller på dessa näringsämnen,
    så leder det till en långsammare tumörtillväxt och i bästa fall
    eliminering av tumören.
    Att påvisa en säregenskap hos tumörer, såsom en förändrad metabolism,
    har stor potential att upptäcka nya diagnostiska redskap såsom terapeutiska
    strategier.
