Modern therapies in the paediatric CNS cancer lead to up to 80% 5-year survival and cranial radiotherapy is a crucial modality in the treatment of high-grade brain tumours. However, it is considered a major risk for cognitive impairment in survivors, particularly in children.
My PhD project focuses on unraveling the alterations happening in the juvenile brain after cranial radiotherapy throughout time. At the same time, I use classic drugs like lithium as well as a novel award-winning technique, called antisense oligonucleotides, in order to ameliorate and/or reverse the irradiation-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive decline in the paediatric cancer survivors.
