Dorcus Kiwanuka Henriksson

Dorcus holds a doctoral degree in International Health with a focus on health systems from Uppsala University in Sweden and a Master in Public Health from Makerere University and a medical degree from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda.

Dorcus is the chair of the governance board of the Emerging Voices for Global Health Network (EV4GH) which is a global network of over 350 young researchers and professionals from over 60 countries around the world. She also seats on the Executive committee of Health systems Global, the first international membership organization fully dedicated to promoting health systems and policy research and knowledge translation. As one of the women in Global Health Sweden Chapter, she continues to promote visibility and recognition of women as leaders and experts in global health.

She has worked within HIV treatment and care, capacity building, health management, primary health care, maternal, newborn and child health and health systems. Dorcus professional work experience has taken her from practising medicine in rural Uganda, heading and managing a district health system and working on health sector reform, to international assignments in health development initiatives in Zambia for the Swedish Government and experience from other developing countries for example Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, People’s Democratic Republic of Laos. She has experience working with multilateral and bilateral organization, governments and within academia.

Dorcus research areas include health systems strengthening through enhancing the district managers’ ability to use evidence in the decision-making process and promote community empowerment.  Understanding how context-specific information and evidence can be used to identify health system bottlenecks, make decisions in the planning process and inform policy. Other research areas are maternal newborn and child health.
